Atlanta ranks 12th among the top 50 metro areas for women-owned businesses. In 1999, women owned 138,000 firms, provided 31,000 jobs and generated $50 million in sales.

In 1996, there were 117,000 women-owned businesses in Atlanta, employing 222,000 workers and generating $30 million in sales revenue. That is an increase of 53.9% in the number of firms, 110% in the number of employees and 150% in sales between 1992 and 1999.

As of 1999, there are over 239,000 women-owned businesses in Georgia accounting for 37% of all firms in the state.

In Georgia, as in the nation as a whole, most women-owned firms are in services and retail trade. Over half (52%) of the women-owned firms in Georgia are in services and 18% are in retail trade.
